Hours after Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for a Mogadishu suicide attack on a police stationhouse that killed more than 10 people including policemen, the beleaguered president of Somalia’s transitional federal government, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, on Monday gave a welcoming address at the start of training classes for 940 soldiers.

Sheikh Amed proclaimed that Somalia’s al Qaeda ally, Al Shabaab, has failed to win any victories in recent battles within the city of Mogadishu.

The advanced training is being held at the new military base in Mogadishu’s southwestern tip. Several government officials spoke and welcomed the soldiers.

During his remarks, Ahmed stressed that the Somali military must bring about "huge changes in the months ahead" and that the soldiers must drive out what he called international terrorists from war-torn and impoverished Somalia.

“Al Shabaab has failed and encountered a huge blow in recent Mogadishu battles they had with the powerful Somali army” Ahmed said according to al Jazeera TV.

"They are in their weakest phase as they lost several military trenches [that the] Somali army are now controlling," he said, referring to the fact that trench warfare is still a reality in that primitive nation.

Somali military instructors will offer basic military skills to the Somali recruits, according to Tom Hornung, a police instructor who's trained foreign police officers throughout the world.

Last year, Somali soldiers trained in counterinsurgency tactics for six months in Uganda.
