CIA Director William Burns made a diplomatic visit to Mogadishu, engaging in discussions with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Mahad Salad, the head of the Somali National Intelligence Agency. The meeting, held at Mogadishu International Airport, delved into several issues, prominently addressing the contentious agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland. Core topics included "security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and regional developments."

At the heart of the ongoing crisis is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on New Year's Day, which entails Ethiopia leasing a 20-kilometer coastal stretch in Somaliland for a commercial port and military base. The Somali government vehemently opposes the deal, characterizing it as "aggression" and a "clear violation of sovereignty."

The White House echoed concerns on Tuesday, publicly opposing the Ethiopia-Somaliland agreement. Worries were expressed about potential instability and the impact on international counterterrorism endeavors. John Kirby, the coordinator of strategic communications for the National Security Council, emphasized the administration's unease with Ethiopia potentially recognizing Somaliland, underscoring support for Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As part of his regional tour, Director Burns previously visited Nairobi, engaging in discussions with Kenyan President William Ruto and the intelligence director.

In a separate development, US Central Command reported two missing sailors off the coast of Somalia, confirming the initiation of ongoing search and rescue operations. This incident introduces an additional layer of complexity to the evolving dynamics in the region.
