At least 3 people have been killed and 7 others injured in a landmine explosion at a small village in Galgudud, Somalia. Local commissioner Osman Isse Nur said the landmine went off underneath a passing truck traveling through Il Guulle village, about 60 km south of Guri Eli.

Nur said that more than 20 goats aboard the truck were also killed in the blast. Authorities believe the landmine has been in the road for several years. The wounded were taken a hospital in the district.

“The victims were [a] nomadic family, running after rain [in] parts of Galgudud and Mudug regions in the center of the country hit by severe drought,” Osman Isse Nur explained.

Severe drought hit parts of the Mudug region in central Somalia and has effected both local residents and domestic animals. The most drought affected areas are the villages of Ba’ad Weyne, el Dher, Ad, and Hobyo. Mohammed Ali, a local elder, said that about 500 domestic animals died from lack of access to wet hay to graze on and water to drink, while locals face shortages of water and food.

Nonetheless, this is not the first time an forgotten landmine has exploded in the region. Officials say locals must always be vigilant when crossing unchecked terrain.

In December 2009, six children from one family in Balanbal were killed by a similar explosion while they were cooking.
