The Somali government has announced that it has conducted a series of operations targeting Al-Shabaab militants in the Mudug, Middle Shabelle, and Bakool regions, resulting in the deaths of over 80 militants.
A press release from the Ministry of Information of the Federal Government stated that the initial operation near Harardhere resulted in the killing of more than 40 Al-Shabaab fighters. The militants were reportedly gathered at a location known as Ba’aadka Farah Adan.
Another operation took place in the Fiqaay forest, approximately 15 kilometers from the Daru Nicma area. This joint effort by Somali government forces and their international allies led to the deaths of over 35 Al-Shabaab militants. The operation targeted militant fighters and their military vehicles, which had previously launched attacks on Daru Nicma. The government also reported the destruction of several military vehicles during the operation.
In a third strike, government forces targeted Al-Shabaab strongholds in the Wajid district of the Bakool region, resulting in the elimination of six militants.
The Ministry of Defense stated that these operations are part of a broader strategy to weaken Al-Shabaab’s capabilities and disrupt their plans to destabilize regional security. The Ministry also expressed gratitude to international partners for their support during the missions.
However, the casualty figures provided by the Somali government regarding Al-Shabaab militants have not been independently verified.
These operations come as Al-Shabaab recently regained control of several areas in the Mudug region following government withdrawal, leading to the displacement of over 7,000 individuals in the wider Galmudug region.
