Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Chief, Ibrahim Kalın, and Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held a meeting in Mogadishu to discuss enhancing strategic cooperation between the two nations. The meeting, reported by the Somali presidency, focused on key areas of mutual interest, including security, intelligence, counter-terrorism efforts, and promoting regional stability.
During the meeting, they were joined by Abdullahi Mohamed Ali, Chief of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). This discussion builds upon Türkiye’s recent defense and economic cooperation agreement with Somalia, signed in February. As part of this agreement, Türkiye will provide maritime security support to help Somalia defend its territorial waters.
Türkiye has been a close ally of Somalia, investing in its education, infrastructure, health, and providing extensive humanitarian aid. Notably, Türkiye has its largest embassy in Africa located in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Furthermore, Türkiye has established its largest overseas military facility in Mogadishu, aimed at training the Somali National Army. This meeting between Türkiye and Somalia reflects their commitment to strengthening their partnership for the benefit of both nations and the region as a whole.
