Al-Shabab Leaders Defect and Surrender to Somali National Army in Lower Jubba Region

Four senior leaders of the al-Shabab militant group defected and surrendered to the Somali National Army stationed in the Bulo-Haji area of the Lower Jubba region on Tuesday.

Reportedly, the Somali National News Agency confirmed that among those who surrendered were the Emir of Bulo-Haji village, the head of the group’s finance in the area, the head of intelligence, and the leader of the so-called tax collector.

Interestingly, the federal government and Jubbaland security forces have restored internet access to the Bulo-Haji area, where al-Shabab militants had blocked the internet years ago.

Notably, earlier this month, Somali army forces, backed by local clan militias, recaptured Bulo-Haji, a strategic area located approximately 80 kilometers south of Kismayo, the capital of the Lower Jubba region.

Commending the efforts, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre congratulated the Somali National Army and the Jubbaland administration for their victory against al-Shabab in the Jubbaland region.
