Somali Army Thwarts Al-Shabaab Attack, Displays Bodies of Militants

In a recent operation, Somali army forces have showcased ten bodies of al-Shabaab militants killed during a foiled terror attack in the El-dher district of the Galgadud region.

Confirming the operation, a statement from the Ministry of Information of the Federal Government of Somalia on Tuesday reported that these bodies were discovered on the outskirts of the district after a three-day sweep in the area.

Furthermore, the Ministry disclosed that several other militants were captured alive during the operations.

Revealing more details, Somalia’s government stated that five of its soldiers were killed in a battle on Saturday, during which nearly 50 fighters from the Islamist militant group al-Shabaab were neutralized. The confrontation occurred in the El-dher district, approximately 350 kilometers (215 miles) north of the capital, Mogadishu.

Acting on intelligence, government troops, along with supporting militia forces, received information about an impending al-Shabaab attack in Ceeldheer, located in the Galgadud region. They set an ambush and “destroyed” the militant group, according to a government statement.

For over 16 years, al-Shabaab has been waging a deadly insurgency against the fragile central government in Mogadishu.
