Mogadishu, Somalia – On Monday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Russian Ambassador to Djibouti and Somalia, Mikhail Golovanov, to discuss a range of critical issues including security, social, and humanitarian concerns.
During the meeting, President Mohamud expressed his gratitude to the Russian government and people for their significant support in Somalia’s Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) debt relief process. He highlighted Russia’s role in aiding Somalia’s economic recovery through this crucial financial assistance.
Although specific details of the discussions were not disclosed by the Somali government, the meeting underscores the ongoing cooperation between Somalia and Russia in addressing mutual interests and challenges.
Earlier this year, Somalia achieved a major milestone by securing the cancellation of 99% of its debt to members of the Paris Club of creditor nations. This substantial debt relief, amounting to over $2 billion, included contributions from countries such as the United States, Japan, and Russia, marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s economic revitalization.
