Strengthening Turkish-Somali Relations

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held a detailed discussion on Monday, covering a range of important issues. According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, the conversation highlighted the deepening relationship between the two nations.

President Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s steadfast support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and unity, stressing the importance of maintaining Somalia’s sovereignty in the face of various internal and external challenges. He assured President Mohamud that Türkiye would continue to aid Somalia in its fight against terrorism, emphasizing the shared goal of regional stability and security.

The discussion also focused on the escalating conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia, which has worsened since Ethiopia signed a port deal with Somaliland on January 1. Erdogan expressed Türkiye’s readiness to mediate in the conflict, aiming to de-escalate tensions and promote peaceful dialogue. This mediation effort is part of Türkiye’s broader strategy to play a constructive role in resolving regional conflicts and fostering stability in the Horn of Africa.

In addition to security and diplomatic issues, Erdogan highlighted the potential for enhanced bilateral cooperation in various sectors, particularly energy and defense. He emphasized that strengthening ties in these areas would not only benefit both nations economically but also enhance their security and strategic capabilities. The call concluded with a mutual commitment to advancing collaboration and addressing common challenges.
