Tragic Incident Off Yemeni Coast: Capsized Boat Leaves Dozens Missing, Few Survivors

On Wednesday night, a boat with at least 45 refugees capsized off the coast of Taiz, Yemen, with only four survivors, as reported by the UN refugee agency in Yemen on Thursday.

The capsizing was due to strong winds and overloading, the agency stated. It is working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to assist the survivors and ensure their protection.

There were no further details provided about the other refugees on board.

This tragic event is reminiscent of a June incident where 49 migrants died and 140 went missing after a vessel with 260 migrants from Somalia capsized near the Yemeni coast.

IOM has been recording migrant deaths and disappearances along the migration route from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to Gulf countries since 2014, totaling 1,860 deaths.

The United Nations reported 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year.
